The Science of Lure Choice

Choosing the right lure depends on a few variables like; Weather conditions, water colour and water depth. Here are some tips to get you started.

These tips apply more to inshore stickbaits but can also be applied to game fishing lure selections.

Bright colours like red, orange and yellow are better used in shallow waters. The deeper they go, the harder they are for fish to see.

When fishing in medium depth green and blue colours will be more visible and alluring for fish than bright colours.

For any deep sea fishing use dark lures like purple or black. At depths where light is barley visible colour doesn't show. The motion and vibrations of the lure are most attractive quality for them.

Reflective, glittery and metalic lures are best used on bright and sunny days.

On cloudy or overcast days steer towards solid or dark colours.

Understanding the relationship between lure design and fish behavior is vital for angling success. It's an art that combines scientific research, field experience, and an angler's intuition. By knowing these factors you can narrow down the most effective lure choices, stacking the odds in your favor.
